There are two flavors of local backup: Quick (which backs up only new and changed files) and Full (which backs up everything). Local backups can be written to CDs, DVDs, external drives (such as USB), and network drives. The local backup, too, can't back up open files, making it unsuited for protecting your Outlook mail file or any others you habitually leave open. Online and local backup use different backup sets-it would be nice to be able to choose one set for both. Upline's local backup option is a nice perk. Upline also lacks a virtual drive entry in your My Computer folder, a feature commonly offered in this space.

You need to close the file, right-click on its entry in the large Upline window, and choose "Back Up Selected Files." Other services, like IDrive, let you select "Back up as soon as possible" from a file's right-click menu in a Windows folder. Backing up a specified file on the spot is also less streamlined than in services with Windows Explorer integration. This makes for a little less convenience but perhaps less intrusion on your system. There are no dots to tell you what's backed up, such as Carbonite offers, and no right-click menu options like what most others have. Upline doesn't add anything to your regular Windows Explorer views the way most backup services do. To complete changes to your settings, you have to enter your password-a good protection (which you can, however, disable).

Network drives, too, appeared in the directory tree, but I was not permitted to add them to my Watch Locations-even in a Pro account. (Upline's Program Manager, Irv Christy, told me, however, that this ability would be added in a "very near release.") When I checked e-mail file types, I got an error message saying "Upline does not back up file types dbx, eml, msg…." This means that you can't yet back up your Outlook mail file with Upline. For example, you can check just Movies/Videos, or drill down and choose from over 40 specific movie/video file types.
File types are collapsible and expandable. It goes instead to your Watch Locations and backs up only those file types. Unlike MozyHome, however, Upline doesn't scan your whole system for these types. It's a much friendlier version of the rules-based backup set in MozyHome Online Backup. For example, if you want My Documents backed up but none of its subfolders, you'd have to add all the subfolders to Excluded.įile Types lets you designate files of specific types for backup-say, all financial files or all music files. This setup isn't quite as handy as the full directory trees with check boxes that some services offer. Watch Locations lets you select the folders and files you want to add to or remove from your backup, and it has an Excluded Folders section. This dialog has tabs for Schedule, Watch Locations, File Types, Advanced (just for proxy, port, and local backup on/off), and Updates. The Settings dialog is where you can really tune Upline.
You can hit the Stop Backup button at any time and tweak settings when a backup isn't in process.
The smaller version of the interface-aka, the widget interface-offers most of the program choices and shows the percent backed up, a search box, and a sharing link. Files that have been successfully backed up appear in green those in red have not. Next, the program's large Advanced/Upline Explorer interface appears, showing a folder tree of those directories, and the progress for each file as it is being compressed. I wish it had asked first, but most people will want to back these up anyway. Upline gets right to work backing up your Desktop, My Documents, and Favorites folders. But since we're most interested in online backup here, I tested that first. This lets you save your backup to local media like CDs, DVDs, USB keys, external hard drives, or network drives. You start out with the Configuration wizard, whose first choice, Local Backup, isn't offered by most other online backup services.
